A social media post sparked concern this week about cows in a field near Sanford.
People began stopping by the pasture to bring food and water, but the sheriff’s office said Thursday that the owner tells them the cows are taken care of.
The cows are on a plot of land just off International Parkway in the Sanford area.
This week, a post on social media concerned folks who live nearby.
“There was a post about these cattle in a fenced-in area that haven’t had food and water,” Douglas Dunstan, who lives in Sanford, said.
He decided to come out to the field with food and water.
“It wasn’t enough,” he said.
So he said he and his wife posted on social media themselves, calling on people to bring what they could.
Dunstan said he has brought a water trough, water, and bales of hay.
“The minute we put the water down in the little bins, it was gone,” he said.
WESH reached out to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office about the cows on Thursday. They didn’t confirm who owns the animals or the land they’re on, but the sheriff’s office said they are aware of the cattle and are investigating. They said the owner has been receptive and is cooperating with deputies from their Range and Water unit. The owner has not been charged with any crime.
People out there on Thursday said they were concerned by how the cows looked.
“I think obviously they’re malnutritioned [sic]. I don’t think they’re on the verge of dying with no food, but they don’t look that healthy to me. When you see skin and bones on their backs and you see the ribs, that’s not a good sign for any animal,” Dunstan said.
But the sheriff’s office said the owner “reported that the livestock look thin because they gave birth in June,” and said that they have access to food, water and shade.
The sheriff’s office said, “Deputies were back out at the pasture Thursday, will continue to work with the owner to ensure his cattle continue to improve.”
