The controversy surrounding the new Snow White movie has been evident, with many fingers pointed at lead actress Rachel Zegler and her outspoken comments.
The film, which was released to theaters on March 21, is the latest live action remake of the Disney classic and follows in the footsteps of Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Mulan. However Zegler has raised eyebrows with some of her comments during production as well as whilst promoting the new film, with Disney bosses said to have been concerned.
The film, which has had a disappointing opening weekend at the box office with just $87 million worldwide despite its huge budget, has been mired with controversy including some of Zegler's 'Free Palestine' comments on X which saw the film’s producer Marc Platt fly to New York to speak directly with her. The comment also saw Disney forced to step up security for Zegler's Israeli co-star Gal Gadot as she was then targeted with death threats.
An insider told Variety: "She didn’t understand the repercussions of her actions as far as what that meant for the film, for Gal, for anyone."
The post on X wasn't the only outspoken comment from Zegler, as she also called the 1937 original “dated” because the prince “literally stalks Snow White.” In an interview with Variety at D23 two years ago, she said of the remake: “She’s not going to be saved by the prince. She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be."
Zegler is also thought to have annoyed her co-star gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, with Zegler heavily promoting “free Palestine" on social media. The comments have caused tension as Gadot is Israeli and has been an outspoken supporter of Israel on social media amid the ongoing conflicts and huge loss to life.
The Snow White movie has been plagued with rumors of discord and increasing distance between Zegler and co-star Gal Gadot, with the pair even promoting the film separately at different premiere events. Inside sources have claimed Gadot has been left "annoyed" by the drama surrounding her and her co-star.
An inside source told People: "Gal is annoyed by the movie drama. She enjoyed filming. She was fine with Rachel, but they are not friends. … They did a job together and that’s it."
The stars previously have walked the red carpet together, and earlier this month were seen posing with each other at the premiere of Snow White. The pair also presented an award together, showing a united front to the public at the 97th Academy Awards, but the frosty relationship between the pair is thought to be the reason the film's premiere has been scaled back by Disney.
