Nearly a week after the Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost became Pope Leo XIV, his older brother, Louis Prevost, 73, promised to ’tone down’ his MAGA-themed social media posts, which have been hailed as ‘gross’ even by the New York Post.
While the rest of the world adjusts to what it means to have an American Pope, the elder Prevost said he would “probably tone it down,” referring to his anti-Democrat rhetoric, since his little brother was elected Pope.
Prevost is now seeing significant blowback over his Facebook posts, mostly written before his brother became the Pope. By Tuesday, these posts had vanished from public view.
Among the contested posts was a reshared video of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling her a 'drunk c—.' The post also hinted at Mr. Pelosi being gay, parroting a false narrative that circulated among right-wing circles before a violent home invasion in October 2022.
Another post highlighted by The Daily Beast urged folks to "Keep [their] powder dry," warning of a "war right here at home, a war for our streets and neighborhoods."
The Florida-dwelling Prevost also circulated a meme depicting a mental institution with the words, "Where the woke lived before the '70s," as reported by the publication. Prevost, amidst various rants, declared that anyone with a transgender child is "a sh-ty parent," and demanded that "anti-Trump Democrats" should "be arrested and tried for subversion and even treason against the U.S.A."
The New York Post slammed at least one of his statements as "awful" and "gross."
Come Monday, Prevost found himself on "Piers Morgan Uncensored," where Morgan recited some of the contentious posts to him. "It's quite lively stuff for a bloke who's now the pope's older brother," Morgan quipped.
"Well, I posted it, and I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't kind of believe it," Prevost admitted to Morgan, before adding that he'd probably calm the posting.
A self-proclaimed "MAGA type," Prevost told Morgan that Pope Leo XIV was "much more liberal" than himself, but hesitated to label his brother "woke." He anticipated that Leo XIV would steer a "down the middle."
"But he knows I am who I am," Prevost commented regarding the new pope's awareness of his stances. "He's well aware of my positions. He knows I'm probably not going to change, and I don't think I will, other than to, just as you say, tone it down."
So far, the 69-year-old Augustinian missionary, elected in a 24-hour conclave last week, called for journalists to use words for peace, to reject war and to give voice to the voiceless.
He expressed solidarity with journalists around the world who have been jailed for trying to seek and report the truth. Drawing applause from the crowd, he asked for their release.
