Birmingham meteorologist James Spann heard from social media followers across the political spectrum Tuesday after a post that referenced a contentious body of water.
In a post on social media platform X, Spann recounted how he got drawn into a controversy regarding what to call the body of water along Alabama’s coast.
“I made the mistake of sharing a Facebook post this morning featuring a photo from a follower that used the term ‘Gulf of America’ in the description,” Spann recounted.
“Within minutes, I was called a ‘Nazi’, ‘denier’, and several types of ‘phobes,’ he wrote. ”I deleted the post… then I was called ‘woke’ and a ‘libtard’.“
President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed and declared February 9 was officially Gulf of America Day.
For U.S. Google Map users only, the body of water appears as the Gulf of America when using the navigational service. For those outside the U.S. and Mexico, the map will show Gulf of America in parentheses under Gulf of Mexico.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration also released a notice about implementing the gulf’s name change.
According to a Fox News poll released last month, the Gulf of America renaming is among President Donald Trump’s least popular policies; only the proposal to acquire to Greenland ranks worse among registered voters.
As far as Spann is concerned, he is resolved to avoid any further controversy.
“From now on with me it’s simply ‘The Gulf,’ Spann said. “I’m beginning to think my left shoe is politicized.”
