Before reading this article, had you ever heard of the haenyeo, the legendary women divers of Jeju Island who explore the seabed without tanks or oxygen? This age-old tradition, carried on by intrepid women, is revealed to you in this groundbreaking exhibition combining contemporary art, archives and authentic objects.
Located in the south of South Korea, Jeju is a volcanic island with spectacular scenery: black cliffs, deep forests, lava tunnels and natural springs. Nicknamed “the island of three abundances” – stones, winds and women – it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through this exhibition, you’ll discover a little-known but fascinating universe, where feminine resilience blends with raw, spiritual nature.

During your visit, you will explore the daily life of the haenyeo through a rich and immersive artistic and documentary journey:
Two complementary satellite exhibitions plunge you even deeper into the soul of Jeju: a contemplative stroll along the famous Jeju Olle trail, and a poignant historical section on the April 3, 1948 uprising, inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.
